but it's tough to use flash in museums, restaurants, churches and dozens of other places.

Using strobes is an artform in itself, and unless you invest in a good strobe, and take the time to learn how to use it, you are probably better off not using flash at all. That leaves you with only three other options.... pumping up ISO, which could create noise...... slowing down your shutter.... which could create motion blur..... or using faster lenses at maximum aperture.

I think the last option is the best.

Of course, you could use your camera's built in flash, but I have never liked the results I get using it. There is probably some good reason that the very best cameras don't even have built in flashes.
