It's only shocking if you happen to fly over a thunderstorm and get hit with a TGB. Otherwise, I don't think this is correct. Planes fly no higher than 40,000 ft, and by that elevation the gamma rays have long been absorbed and even the secondary particles are absorbed. See the diagram on this page...

How many millions of cameras take flights every year in people's pockets and bags? You'd think we would have heard of this if it were a problem.
