Putting the Pentax Q price in perspective

The Pentax Q with the standard prime and the standard zoom costs 1100$. So how much is that? Well, for that money, you could buy:

Pentax K-x
18-55 zoom
55-300 zoom
Canon S95

Pentax K-r
18-55 zoom
55-300 zoom
35/2.4 prime

Sony NEX-5
16/2.8 prime
18-55 zoom
Holga camera
Diana camera
Vivitar Wide And Slim
Lots of film, developing and prints to hand out to friends and family

iPhone 4 (unlocked)
Wide and fish-eye accessory lenses
Nikon P7000

Two-way flight ticket from Los Angeles to Hawaii
4 nights at a Hotel in Honolulu
Canon S90

Samsung NX100
20-55 zoom
30/2 prime
50 6-packs of beer

Used Canon 5D full frame DSLR
50/1.8 prime

Used 4x5" view camera with two good lenses
Epson V700 scanner

Used Leica M3
Used Leica Summarit 50mm F1.5
A light meter
Some film, developing and prints

The S95/S90 and P7000 both have bigger sensors, longer zoom ranges, bigger aperture zooms, and the S95/S90 even matches the prime in speed at the wide end. The S90/S95 is of course also considerably smaller.

The 1100$ figure is a MSPR, but unlike Sigma, Pentax cameras actually do start out pretty much at their MSRP. The Pentax Q is nothing like the Auto 110 of old. That camera had a fourth of the image area of mainstream system cameras at the time. The Pentax Q is down to 1/13th the image area of a APS-C camera, while costing more than APS-C DSLRs and EVILs. The Auto 110 was tiny compared to the competition, while the Pentax Q is rather close in size to the NEX, m4/3 and NX100 cameras, see size comparisons here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/PENTAXQ/PENTAXQA.HTM
