I am looking at the D90 or the D3100. Which would you choose and why?

If you are never going to use a Nikon lens with only mechanical drive , (that require a focusing motor in the body, and you seem to like the smaller body, then go with the D3100, otherwise I would recommend the D90 because it has a built in lens focusing motor, which the D3100 does not. Personally, I like the screw drive lenses because they can last decades without a motor to wear out and you can find some excellent used Nikon and third party Nikon mount lenses (like the Tokina), for not much money. OTOH, I doubt Nikon will keep making cameras with lens focusing motors forever, so a lens with a motor is a safer bet in that regard.
