It really depends on lens . The 2X III just hunts on my 35-350 L . But I notice no slow down in AF on the new 70-200 mk II . [ very little use so far , but specs say it does slow down AF . ]
I think if you are planing on printing over 5 X 7 go for the III .

Keep in mind that you can probably buy the 1.4 and 2X II for the price of either III .
Always buy the best / latest you can afford .
