I have a suitable 70-200 L lens, but noticed that the older II versions are considerably cheaper.

As long as it's a f2.8 version then it's worthwhile considering an extender.

Has anyone out there tried both and able to offer an insight into whether the paying extra for the newer version is worthwhile?

I have the 70-200f2.8isII and the 1.4II, 2xII, 2xIII. I use to have the 70-2002.8isI as well.

I'd suggest getting the 1.4II. The difference between the II and III is quite small as other's have pointed out and you'll be saving a fair amount of money especially if you pickup one a used one.

The 2xIII works nicely on the 70-200II however focusing speed is reduced by 50% so be aware of that. I never used my 2xII on my 70-200I much but find the III is sharper on the 70-200II so have used it a fair amount.
