I dumped my 18-200 long ago for the 17-55 & ledgendary 180mm f/2.8. I found that these two lenses are about the best setup for traveling. I also have the 300mm f/4. But, I think it's too heavy for hiking, and usually requires a tripod or an ISO above 800. The 180mm f/4 translates to 270mm on the DX format; and is almost always enough reach while traveling. Here's a couple of hand held shots I took with it on Maui.
