Minolta MD MACRO 50mm 3.5 Quick Review

I've bought this lens a few weeks ago for a rather low price (50€) in mint condition, with its extension tube (1:2 to 1:1), its original case and 3 additional vivitar extension tubes :

It's rather funny to compare the vivitar extension to the cheap extension tubes from ebay.

I wanted to compare this lens to my best prime so far : the Minolta MC Rokkor PG 50mm 1.4 + Extension tube.

Here's how they look like :

The focus amplitude of the macro 3.5 is impressive.

Now, let's get down to business. These are JPEG from RAW, no sharpening at all, only color balance and automatic exposure. I focused on the top of the globe. Sorry for the boring shots...

Minolta MD MACRO 50mm 3.5 @ f8

Minolta MD MACRO 50mm 3.5 @ f11

Minolta MC Rokkor PG 50mm 1.4 @ f8

Minolta MC Rokkor PG 50mm 1.4 @ f11

100% crop comparison (click on "Original" link)

As you can see, the results are similar ! So, why buy a dedicated Macro lens ?

Well, extension tubes are cool and cheap, but it's sometimes really boring to exchange extension tubes if you want to get closer or farther. With the Minolta MD MACRO 50mm 3.5, you can focus from 20cm (1:2) distance to infinity, or from 1:2 to 1:1 with its extension tube.

What's your opinion ?
