Maximising Camera Gear in Airline Carry-On Luggage

How do you guys and gals carry your gear when flying/backpacking?

I'm about to undertake a six week trip to S.E Asia; partly work (two semi-paid weddings) and partly backpacker-style holiday. The budget airlines I'll be flying on have either 7kg or 10kg carry-on limits. I'll be taking two DSLR bodies, a Canon flash and as many lenses as I can get away with.

My main requirements in a bag are:

  • maximum allowable carry-on size (which seems to be 56cm x 36cm x 23cm)

  • lightweight, so that I can carry the max amount of gear

  • comfortable enough to carry while searching for a hotel or while out shooting

  • discrete

My current Lowe Pro Flipside 400 AW bag: has seen better days/isn't quite big enough/one of the zips has broken. I've had a decent look at the Lowe Pro and Think Tank ranges, but nothing seemed suitable.

All opinions, thoughts and advice kindly received.
