They aren't really any smaller. That's their problem. You still can't pocket them, so you still have to "wear" them, either around your neck or in a bag.

It's certainly true that they aren't pocketable (unless you have very large pocikets). But that doesn't mean there is no gain.

My standard APS-C walk-around kit over the past few years has consisted of:
Pentax K100D
Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5
Tamron 70-300/4-5.6

With my m43 gear, I instead plan on carrying:
Panasonic GH2 or G3
Panasonic 7-14/4
Panasonic 14-45/3.5-5.6
Panasonic 45-200/4-5.6
Panasonic 20/1.7
Minolta MD 50/1.4 with Fotodiox adapter

The weight of the two kits is roughly the same (about 1.7 kg) and that's about the limit for what I'd like to carry. But I certainly prefer the second of the two kits with respect to photographic versatility. Now give me the Canon 5D kit you'd prefer with a weight limitation of 1.7 kg and let us compare what they buy us in terms of photographic opportunities/versatility.

The 5D kit would be way too powerful by comparison, so lets try:

Canon T3
Tokina 10-17
Tamron 18-270VC
Canon 50 1.8

Faster, wider, longer better image quality, 1535g.
