To me, they both are so close in visual performance as not to matter. Both have comparable purple fringing.

I think the newer one is a bit more of an optical compromise, but also, it's an optical advance. I guess it's how you choose to look at it.

I bought the older model just before the new one came out--I bit the bullet and got it too. I like the size/weight reduction and the quieter/faster AF of the PZD. However, I think the optical performance is just a tad better with the older model. But certainly, not quantitatively obvious enough for me to use it in lieu of the new one. I really do like the PZD model better.
