if I understand you correctly, you even want groups of 2-3 people in the shot.
Then even 50mm can be a bit long - depending on the rooms you have.

a fast standard zoom may be called for then, like 18-50 f2.8 type lenses.

A good image quality one is the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 without VC, though a bit noisy motor.
