100-400 or 400 f/6.6?

I know it's a tough call, but I'm trying to decode bewteen the 100-400 or the 400 f/5.6. I have the 70-200 f/2.8 and the new 70-300 L, but I want more reach (who doesn't?).

The question is of course whether I can live without zoom. I think I'm going to rent the 400 f/5.6 to test that aspect. I rented a 100-400 last year and it was OK, but the shots I got with it didn't look much better to me than shots I got with my 55-250. I have a whole bunch of shots from the two lenses here;

The review at the following link indicates that the 400 f/5.6 is considerably sharper than the 100-400;

In addition to the zoom question, I'm wondering about hand holding the 400, since it doesn't have IS. Renting one should help me with that question.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
