A few more thoughts

Well I got ahold of a 16-85 to test. Couldn't find any D7000s in the local shops, but a friend loaned me his D90.

The lens seems okay on the D90, but no better than okay. Looking at it side-by-side against the cheap Tamron 24-135 on the D700 at normal apertures, I'd say the Tamron was actually sharper over most of the frame. I tried my 50mm prime and 70-300mm VR as well. Even though the D700 has a strong AA filter, it seems somehow that somehow the bigger pixels make it much less demanding of lenses.

Since the D7000 has even smaller pixels, I'm wondering if the lenses, particularly the 16-85 will be up to the task.

(To be fair, Nikon's newer FF lenses, the 28-300 and 24-120/4 aren't anything special either.)
