I just got a D300 and it was working fine a few weeks ago. I took the flash drive out to print pictures, now the display screen won't come on. How do I turn it on?

Did you charge the battery? Is the camera working otherwise well?

It's charged, just a black display screen. The memory card is in and i've even tried switching to a blank one

Can you take any image at all? I mean, the display itself is not needed, but if the memory card is not inserted my camera does not take an image and displays -E- instead of the number of images.

Try reformatting the card in camera, and try a 2-button reset.

Does the top LCD screen show the proper info?

I have cleared the memory card and inserted into the camera. Now I don't have anything (Display screen and it won't take pictures.) I have tried several times. The camera clicks when I take pictures, but nothing is on the card.

What is proper information? This camera was given to me by a family member who lost the manual. I am usually good at figuring out electronics, but I am stumped on this one.

Download the manual from Nikon.

I think when they ask for more information they mean from you, otherwise there is a series of, try this - done that posts.

  • Download the manual from Nikon and read it.
  • Did you do the two button reset? If not then do it. If you don't know how to, please read the manual.
  • Did you try without card? What happens?
  • My camera displays the menu when I press the Menu button and displays the info if I press the info botton, even if I remove both cards.
  • Does the top display displays anything?
  • What does the number of frames show with and without card?
  • Did you try with a different card?
  • What is displayed on the top display whan the camera is switched off?
  • What is displayed on the top display whan the camera is switched on?
  • You said tha battery is charged. How do you know that?
  • Is the view finder dim and greyish or bright and clear both when the camera is on and off?
  • Look into the CF slot to see if there are any bend pins. Your card slot or card might be damaged.
  • My camera does not click if I don't have cards in it. It does focus, but not takes an image. What do you mean by saying your camera clicks? Is that the shutter sound or the focus and VR you hear?

Does the top LCD look different when you turn on the camera?

When turned off, it should only display the number of pix left. It will be in the lower-right corner inside a pair of square brackets. When there is no flash card, it will show "- E -" in that "box". SO, as a start, does it look like that when power is off?

Next, when you turn on the camera, a LOT of other stuff shows on the top LCD. SO, do you see a bunch of other stuff when you turn it on?

Are you sure battery is charged? If have a second battery put it in, same for memory card.

After this or if can't. Take lens off and put back on to make sure connections made.Turn camera back on. If LCD screen on top of camera shows something other than number of pictures left look in viewer finder and focus on object and see if you can take a picture.

If you can take a picture then push the squiggly line near top left of camera used to display pictures on video (display) screen. If video shows up display screen is OK.

Also push menu button. If shows up. Then check manual to see if setting to turn screen off or on.

If most doesn't work then try the reset method.

When the camera is off nothing is displayed on the display screen. It is blank. Even with the battery and memory card in.

  1. Your battery is toast, or
  2. Your camera is toast
Start w/ the battery...go to a store and try another, charged battery...if that fixes it, buy a battery. If not, send to Nikon for analysis/repair.

I'm also having trouble with my monitor. I'm stumped and afraid that it will require a trip to Nikon. The camera works fine and I've tried several steps in combination. It works fine, except for the dark monitor. I removed and replace the lens, removed and replace battery and card. I've read the manual and I'm still stumped.

Yes, also the side button reset
  • Did you try without card? What happens?
No change
  • My camera displays the menu when I press the Menu button and displays the info if I press the info botton, even if I remove both cards.
Mine does too
  • Does the top display displays anything?
All the normal info - E when no card, # of available shots, F-stops, etc.
  • What does the number of frames show with and without card?
See above
  • Did you try with a different card?
Yes, same result
  • What is displayed on the top display whan the camera is switched off?
Just the number of photos
  • What is displayed on the top display whan the camera is switched on?
The usual stuff
  • You said tha battery is charged. How do you know that?
I can take pictures, the menu works, the flash works
  • Is the view finder dim and greyish or bright and clear both when the camera is on and off?
Bright and clear on both
  • Look into the CF slot to see if there are any bend pins. Your card slot or card might be damaged.
Checked
  • My camera does not click if I don't have cards in it. It does focus, but not takes an image. What do you mean by saying your camera clicks? Is that the shutter sound or the focus and VR you hear?
Like I said, the camera takes pictures, but the monitor remains dark. Any suggestions? I don't want to send it to the shop, we're leaving on a trip shortly.
