Hope Optio WG-1 Image Quality is Good !

"In the last six years I had all the underwater cameras from Pentax, Panasonic, 2 Olympus, and I tested all (almost) the other UW cameras."

I really wish I can be as rich and own them all. If I do, I will do as I suggest in previous post, pick a scene and a fix ISO, than let the camera determine everything else, than compare the results.

I don't care about video, I only care about photo, In day lighting for nature shot, Is the TS3 better than D10 or vice versa, can you tell me.

In say ISO 400/800, which camera produce better result?

I would greatly appreciate if you can kindly provide test shot.

Thanks.

In fact, I have been trying to find the answer for the last 2 years, I own TX5 and TS1, may buy another one this year or next.

Become a hobby for me, reading anything I can find.

Now I tend to believe D10 has the best IQ, but no wide angle and odd shape let me think twice.

The next to consider is TS3 and WG-1, still very confused.

I want the one with best above water IQ .

I had all those cameras, but I don't have them any more. At the moment I have only TS3 (FT3). I also didn't tested WG-1, but as I know this is just a little differently packaged W90, which has a lot of noise even at ISO 200 (and because Wx cameras don't have IS, ISO 200 and higher is very often selected by this camera). WG-1 apparently has the same optics as the W90 (which is not bad) but because of CCD sensor and lack of IS, images are good only in really good conditions. All of this discouraged me from buying this camera.

About D10 and TS3 and IQ. For my eyes TS3 produces better result. Canon and Panasonic apparently are using a completely different algorithm to convert images to JPG (at all compact cameras) and so (again, in my eyes) photos from TS3 are nicer/better, but if you do Pixel Peeping, then D10 has the advantage.

Forget all the other things you heard about WG-1 in this video, and pay attention only to video quality of HD clips recorded with this camera. Than compare them with HD videos recorded with Panasonic TS2 or TS3! Big difference isn't it? And very similar thing is also with the quality of photos! Panasonic is clearly much better camera, but indeed, WG-1 has the best macro in class of UW cameras.

Thanks. Of all the waterproof camera out there, the Canon D10 is unique in having a non-folded lens design, thus enabling it to have the brightest lens of all F 2.8 (a half stop advantage compare with TS3).

How significant of that in real life is uncertain because I don't own it.

Also http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com find out that it produce very sharp image, much better than TS2 and in fact any other waterproof camera. If true this is very significant.

A bright lens and sharp image enables you to use slow shutter speed instead of pushing up ISO.

Just the fact that it is the only non-folded lens in the bunch will almost force me to buy it. I am just waiting for a possible replacement. If next year this time there is no replacement coming or one using CMOS sensor which I dislike, I will buy it.

Where did you find this information (LINK?)? I can't find this in http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com , and I (because I tested a lot) also do not believe, that D10 produce "very sharp image, much better than TS2". D10 produce a little shraper images, but D10 has so much other disadvantages compared with TS2/TS3, that ...

Jefftan, I find this table ( http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-TS2-Digital-Camera-Review-21646/Canon-D10-Comp.htm ):

Panasonic DMC-TS2 / Canon D10
Price $400 / $290
Color 15.63 / 10.36
Noise 13.83 / 8.33
Resolution 11.82 / 13.97
Image Stabilization 4.09 / 2.24
Shot to Shot 1.46 / 1.46
Video Color 3.25 / 3.10
Video Sharpness 1.37 / 0.48

Both of these cameras proved to be strong performers in our tests, but the TS2 has a slight edge, with better performance in some tests, including shooting more accurate color and having lower noise across the ISO range.

They are equally robust, though; both the TS2 and the D10 can manage dives down to 33 feet, drops from about 6 feet and temperatures down to 14 degrees Farenheight (approximately -10 Celsius). Neither camera is particularly stylish though, with the TS2 having a chunky, blocky design and the D10 looking a bit like a childs toy camera.
..............................................

So, only Resolution at D10 is a little better, everything else speaks in favor of the TS2! And TS3 is even better that TS2 and it can manage dives down to 40 feet!!!

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Canon-PowerShot-D10-Digital-Camera-Review-21322/Resolution.htm

A sharpness score of 21.04 which is very high among all cameras not just TS2, it is actually higher than XZ-1 which has 18.22 sharpness score

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Olympus-XZ-1-Digital-Camera-Review/Resolution.htm

TS2 has a sharpness score of 13.87

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-TS2-Digital-Camera-Review-21646/Resolution.htm

Whether this site is believable is another matter, I simply don't know. It give Sony TX5 a very high score and so I bought it. I like TX5 form factor (who doesn't like a small and light waterproof camera that easily fit in shirt pocket and so light you don't feel it) but the outdoor picture it produce is far from desirable to me. I agree with the review that it has very good noise profile for a small camera, reasonable sharpness.

But the color and the overall feel of the picture (You can call that contrast or dynamic range) is dull and unappealing to me. I am talking about bright outdoor picture which should be very nice for even a cheap CCD camera (such as Canon A series) It maybe because of the CMOS sensor.

Most people don't agree with me and I would consider it just my personal opinion, CMOS sensor is inferior to CCD in bright daylight outdoor photo (color look dull in cloudy sky and look wash out in direct sunlight to me)

It is quite new compare to CCD technology which is mature. I really hope it will got better in the future but it can also be an inherant problem that can't be fixed. I think Canon CMOS is relatively better than others such as Panasonic and Sony but still not as good as old and proven CCD.

Hope it helps. I think we both share the commmon interest of finding the best compact camera (both normal and waterproof). I have been trying to find out which is the best normal compact too (S95,XZ-1,LX5,G12,p7000) and still no definite answer and same for waterproof camera. I guess that's the fun of it. Hoping someday the perfect camera will emerge!

It too me a while to figure it out, but I agree with Jefftan: Most people don't agree with me and I would consider it just my personal opinion, CMOS sensor is inferior to CCD in bright daylight outdoor photo (color look dull in cloudy sky and look wash out in direct sunlight to me)

I tend to agree with you about CCD. The world embraced CMOS for video reasons, but it looks like it will take an iteration or two more before we get back to where we were image wise with CCD. Most of the TOP P&S are today are still CCD. Nikon P7000, Canon G12, S95, LX5, Dlux 5, etc.

Here they compare three generations of Fuji. The 550 is starting to get back to where the F31 was two generations ago. See a two generation old CCD vs todays CMOS.

If possible, please post some pics with blue sky and green glass under bright sunlight and cloudy sky.

Also some indoor pic at ISO 400-800 will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have posted in Open Talk forum and no one agree with me. I don't even bother to respond. Just check out the sample pic in Photography Blog site of the recent CMOS such as nikon p300, all those new Sony and panasonic ZS10 (this is now a consensus that it is worse than ZS7 and even the cheaper ZS8)

If people can't see that they don't look good which is so obvious to me, than I have nothing to say.

They jump to CMOS for 1080 video, which is unnecessary, 720p from old CCD already look good. I want a camera not a camcorder.

Interesting the new TS3 introduce a so called high speed CCD which can do 1080 video but I have heard than image is actually softer than TS2. Not sure if that is true, but if so than it means good photo and video can't co-exist. Of course I will choose photo quality and so should all photographic people. It is the public that snap up CMOS for video and suppose better high ISO performance (don't even sure if it really is so)

People don't realize what a bargain a cheap A3300 IS is (suggested price only $180 with 28mm wide angle) Look at the sample pictures in photography blog, it is clearly better than any more expensive CMOS camera can produce. CCD is good mature technology that is dirt cheap. If I don't own a camera and on a budget, I would rush out to buy it.

Review site in general have too many words and too few sample photo. If I run a review site, I would just grab say 3 similar camera such as TS@,D10,WG-1 use the same ISO than snap the same screne and than post the pic. Let peoples eye decided.

They forget the old saying a picture is worth a thousand words

Hello Mile,

The wife and I just got two Kayaks we are new to this.. So if if you could give some kind of over all review on this camera how it works how well you like it, all the good and bads of it.. that would help us out a lot.. Both me and the wife really likes the looks of this camera and think it would be just the ticket for us
new- be Kayak users.. Thank you!!

Here's a few more guys. I try to get more up as I have more time to shoot.

I do like the camera a lot. But as you can see at high ISO the grain is pretty bad. The camera does feel very over-encumbered with its shootings settings as well. Theres like 30 different presets. In auto mode face detection can't be shut off which is quite annoying; and if your in program mode cycle the camera power your face detection selection (on or off) is not saved.

Another thing is my USB/HDMI hatch lock already seems to be broke.

Thing is really a peace of ####. : ( Not very happy considering Ive used is once time in the environment.
