I just shot my first walk-through video of a large home with my D5000. I didn't record any sound because the company that's going to blend all my clips together does a voice over narration. My initial "footage" looks like it was shot by a waddling penguin. The transition from bright windows to darker areas is disturbing. The jerkiness of me panning left to right is disconcerting.

This is where you would want a Steadicam merlin! :-).

The transition from dark to light issues sounds like you are not using Auto Exposure Lock to lock down the exposure. You may want to try that...I am not sure how to set it on a D5000 but on a D90 it is accessed through the Custom Settings menu.

The jerkiness while panning - use your neck strap to pull the camera taut and you can pan smoothly.
