OK, I did a test last night with my G3. Set the camera on my tripod, set it for MANUAL mode, LARGE, SUPER-FINE JPEG, MANUAL FOCUS set to INFINITY, F-STOP 8.0, and SHUTTER 1/200.
I took two pics of the moon last night, one at Optical 4X and one at Digital 14x. Both were cropped using Photoshop 7.0 (to save space) and re-saved at 12 (Maximum) quality. I then enlarged the optical shot by 3.5x in Photoshop so that it was now 14x and re-saved under a different name.
Here are the results...
Optical 4x:
Digital 14x:
Optical 4x resized 3.5x to equal 14x:
You be the judge. (Note how they vary in color too.)
