my G2 world has been turned upside down! re: digital zoom...

OK, I did a test last night with my G3. Set the camera on my tripod, set it for MANUAL mode, LARGE, SUPER-FINE JPEG, MANUAL FOCUS set to INFINITY, F-STOP 8.0, and SHUTTER 1/200.

I took two pics of the moon last night, one at Optical 4X and one at Digital 14x. Both were cropped using Photoshop 7.0 (to save space) and re-saved at 12 (Maximum) quality. I then enlarged the optical shot by 3.5x in Photoshop so that it was now 14x and re-saved under a different name.

Here are the results...

Optical 4x:

Digital 14x:

Optical 4x resized 3.5x to equal 14x:

A well done experiment. Both photos look good. But my first observation is that the last photo has the best resolution. If I look at the features between 1:00 and 2:00, I see the most resolution with the original optical photo expanded in Photoshop.

But the digital enhanced one is pretty good, and probably good enough for those times when you don't want to work with PS.

Right you are!! I have only used the digital zoom 2-3 times as I could not get close enough to a small subject and needed extra reach. I was surprised at how good the quality of the picture was.

for the answer as to which is which, you'll have to go to: http://www.pbase.com/21farms/zoom

i'm shooting my DD's last soccer game of the season tomorrow morning...i'm going to be using digital zoom for the first time...i'll let you know how it goes.

Proves that if one wants to crop, do it in camera or goes all the way to RAW and it may beat the camera by a thin margin. The in between is the worst(interpolate JPEG).
