Can anyone suggest a publication that I can buy (on the net?) to enable me to learn how to use, what everyboby tells me is The standard image manipulating software. I have struggled on trying to teach myself and always end up reverting back to my old tried and tested Ulead Photo Express. I would rather read a book than try to learn on line from a web site as this suits me better.

If you mean a physical book, check out the Classroom in a Book from Adobe themselves. It taught me in high school, and it was even used in my PS100 course in College. It starts simple, which is good for a beginner.

You'll need the software, though, or else you're not going to get much out of the examples and labs.

Thanks for that, I will try and locate a copy and yes I do have the software. I have Photshop 4, with a promise of Photshop 7 from a friend, so I am keen to learn how to use it.

Robert,

I note that you have posted similar questions on several forums before and I have replied to one of them. I also note that you are in the UK.

Another suggestion - a number of the UK digital photography magazines have photoshop tutorials every month. One of the best (I hope I have the right title) is Digital Photo User which comes with a CD on the cover. This has both tutorials in the magazine and video tutorials on the CD. The CD also contains the images to be manipulated in the tutorial. Other magazines allow you to download the image for use in their tutorials.

I find that the magazines have two advantages over most of the books that I have seen:
1. They come in manageable bites every month

2. They tend to start with a problem ("how can we fix this photo") rather than a tool ("this photoshop tool can do these things").

I tend to look through the magazines each month for a practical problem that I am experiencing and want to fix, and buy that magazine. This is much less daunting than tackling a large book that contains details of every tool in Photoshop.

Thanks for the advice Chris

I have just picked up a copy of DigitalPhotographer (£5) and this has a tutorial CD packaged with it, so will give this a try (magazine is a new title and looks good). I feel I want to plough through a book to know what I'm letting myself into with Photoshop, but I guess learning on screen - hands on does have its plus points, but I can't be doing with learning "on line" - other people in our house need the 'phone!

As I mentioned before, I feel I must try and master Photoshop and cut loose from my confortable, but I guess limited Ulead Photoexpress. Time will tell - but I'm determined to give it a go, hence me trying to seek others advice.

Thanks again for your input

Some other resourses are Adobe web site. I find that using the "help" menu inside of the program is great! Also Adobe has "Adobe Exchange" which has terrific tutorials. Also htttp: http://www.russellbrown.com has tons of quicktime movie tutorials and some printable pdf's. PhotoShop User magazine and its back issues are great! http://www.photoshopuser.com . Ben Willmore's Studio Techniques book is awesome as well as Katrin Eismann's Photshop Restoration and Retouching book. And who could live without one of Scott Kelby's Down & Dirty books. That along with the aforementioned "Classroom in a book" should keep you real busy!

Photoshop books generally come in one of two styles: (1) A to Z guides that cover a full range of functions and (2) books that target specific features or objectives (e.g., restore photos, color managementm, etc.). I have reviewed and used several Photoshop books and one thing I learned is that the "format" or presentation of the information is important. For instance, I personally found that Teach Yourself VISUALLY Photoshop 7 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a Book fit me well. Others might disagree.

Bottom line: I recommend that you get your hands on a few books at a local library or bookstore. Relying only on online research may leave you unsatisfied with the results. At one point, I narrowed my options down to two particular titles. Once I viewed them at the bookstore, however, I realized they weren't for me. I ultimately settled on different ones.

I am having the exact same problem, but with the simpler Photoshop Elements 2!! I hope this doesn't sound demeaning, but I myself am going to try "Photoshop Elements 2 for Dummies". Many times you can learn a few key concepts from these Dummy books that can open doors for you. There is a Photoshop 7 for Dummies"...you may witsh to give it a whirl. Clarke
