I just got a 1GB MicroDrive after Fuji wrongly included a 340MB one in my S2 + MicroDrive box. The problem is:

I get a "! Card not initialized" Error when turning on the camera. I've tried to format the card, but the camera seems unoperable with this card in. With the 340MB everything goes fine. I don't know if I have to format from my PC, have Fuji support to format it or return it as a bad card.

Any help would be much appreciated.

By the way, The S2 is truly amazing. I was a bit suspicius before geting it due to some "soft focus" posts in this forum. What I get is an amazingly sharp image at all resollutions that far exceeds any 35mm film scanning I've seen.

Regards.

Hi Ricardo,
Just format the MD fat16 on your computer, not fat32 or NTFS.
If you format it diffrent than FAT16 will give you simmilar messages.

The S2 Pro is great camera but some people are using cheap soft lenses and that's the reason of getting all of these SOFT images :)).
What Lens You are using?

Thanks very much, Todor. Now it comes the silly question (I admit I don't have the User's Reference handy): How do I format from the PC? When I connect the USB cable to the camera and turn it on, a message in the rear display of the camera appears: "USB Downloading". Nothing else. FinePix viewer doesn't recognice the removable drive, and I don't know how the hell interact with the camera. With the 340 everything goes ok, as stated before.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if the question is too silly ;-)

By the way, I use 50mm f1.8, 35mm f2, 24mm f2.8, 85mm f1.8 and 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 Nikkor lenses. Also have the 28-105mm f2.8 from Tamron, but I'm actually thinking of selling it.

No problem Ricardo,

I am using FireWire connection most of the time and when have any problems with smart media or other media I still can see the media az a removable device in my Explorer (I am PC based). Then is easy to format. I am not shure is it possible to see any removable drives with USB when you have this message.
In your case maybe will be best to get a usb or firewire reader and try with it.

Sorry if I am not so helpful :)).

Well, I'm getting closer: I can reach the removable unit from my PC and format it, but it does a FAT32 unit, and don't remember how to force it to FAT16 when formatting (I'm using W98SE). By the way, do I have to add any folders, as the ones which appear in the 340, or it'll be my S2 which do it automaticly when saving images?

Thanks.

Perfect

Just go right click, format, then drop down menu to choose fat16 and then format OK. Then you just leave it as it is. and format it with the camera once again. It shold accept it this time :))
Probably the boot sector is dammaged and that's why is givving you troubles.

Thats it Man.
:))

I hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the input, Todor. The problem is I don't get any drop down list option for FAT16. The top drop down box shows a 1025.6 MB option. That's all. I gess it's Win98SE that doesn't even consider anyone could want to format FAT16.

I'll try otherwise, anyway. I think I have now the clue to fix it Thanks very much for your help!!!

On a window command prompt, type "help format".

I think the command is

format x: \FS:FAT

when x is your drive letter.

I had the opposite problem having erased files from my Smartmedia card from within the pc.

Solution I found (fitted to your needs). Leave the MD out. Only put in a SM. Wsitch on. Go in the menu and assure SM is your default, so the cam won't hick-up on the MD when its in. Switch off. Put in the MD too.
Switch on. Switch to the MD and choose format!

Good luck!

Thanks very much for the suggestion. It sounds logical.

Now all I need is a SM Card!!! ;-)
