Re: get both

Well, if your wife also has a smartphone, and both want to use a tablet, then you'd both buy the dock. If she doesn't, then we're back to the scenario where one doesn't own a smartphone, and a phone-tablet might end up being cheaper.

And by the way, one thing you are not considering with your docking system is that there are apps specifically designed for the screen size of a smart phone, and there are apps specifically designed for the much larger screen size of a tablet. Obviously, the design, location, orientation, shape, and movement of controls and UI for an app designed for a small cell phone screen are going to be different for an app designed for a tablet screen. After all, that's why Google designed a completely different version of their Android OS (Honeycomb) for use on the tablet! And they specifically said that Gingerbread (their phone OS) was not designed for the larger screen sizes of tablets. Things like UI and layout are absolutely effected when you have a small screen vs a much larger screen. So keep in mind that it isn't just a matter of plugging in a phone and being able to use all of its apps just as successfully as if you had a stand-alone tablet with apps specifically designed for the tablet. There are almost always two versions of apps that app designers make: a smart phone version designed for a smart phone's smaller screen, and a tablet version designed for a much larger tablet screen. It's not just a matter of uprezing the phone app.
