You are just getting the wrong camera

That's quite a strong statement but I won't bite

unless you must absolutely have on-camera flash. After getting a good flash that will bounce at least from 3-5m, I've never looked back at on-camera flash again...

The ability to control off camera flash is one reason I chose the E-PL2 over the E-P2 - like you I hate the look of direct flash and I'm considering an FL-36R, both to get bounce and off camera. (I was playing around last night and you can actually bounce the on camera flash, by holding it partially collapsed with your finger! Obviously it's not powerful enough for serious bounce use but with a low ceiling and a fast lense it might work.

Other reason was the MF assist button, which I don't believe the E-P2 has and that I expect the resale value of the Mk II kit zoom with the E-PL2 to be significantly higher than the MK I kit zoom, due to the big improvement in AF speed.
