Hey guys,

I' m a frequent poster in the rebel forum, but I wanted to gather some tips for my girlfriend, who I just bought a 60D for.

I can only give her so many tips from my experience with a Canon SLR. I was wondering for any of you new 60D owners, or even others, could give her some nice tips about how to get the most out of it?

She will mostly be doing outdoor photography =)

The best is for her to buy some books about photography.

Books about photography are a waste of money. The internet has everything you'll need to know. I enjoyed watching YouTube videos.

My recommendations:
  • Read the manual (seriously)
  • Set Review Time to "Hold"
  • Change from Automatic to Av mode
  • Learn aperture using a 50mm f/1.8
  • Take a picture at f/1.8 and f/8.0 and spot the difference
  • Learn the aperture, shutter speed, ISO "triangle"
  • Change the light meter between spot and evaluative
  • Shoot in RAW, use "Digital Photo Professional" (free w/60D) to convert to JPG
  • Learn to live without a flash before you learn to live with one
That should get you started. After you've learned the above you will know what you want to learn next.

Thank you so much! I will use all of this!

Lol I remember wanting mine to buy a D7000 because I didn't want to share lenses.

1. Buy the magic lantern field guide

2. More importantly: go out and shoot. Practice, practice, practice.

Caution: Do not stare into laser with remaining eye.

I remember that but can't recall the outcome. What eventually happened?
