Getting religious about cycling does not make you invulnerable. Since there is no afterlife (I know. I was half-dead after a motorcycle accident), being vulnerable in the life that we have does matter.

What will you be using to power your transport with in a few years when oil costs two or three times what it does now?

Probably gas from animal effluent (used domestically in China now). There won't be enough animal generated methane around, so we will drive a lot less. Therefore, push cyclists will be in a majority again. They then will have to obey traffic rules so they don't decimate each other as well as pedestrians.

Right now, NZ cyclists do not stop at pedestrian crossings, and they use pedestrian pavements but avoid cycle paths. But when pitted against cars at night, if one of them has a blinking rear light on the blink, he probably does not wear a reflective jacket either.

Since I have been a cyclist in Switzerland, I do have the instinct to avoid them here in NZ. But that instinct does not go as far as making friends with them.
