Re: Sigma 50-500 vs 150-500 on Nikon D300s

From what I've seen and read, the new Sigma 50-500 OS is superior to the Sigma 150-500, at least at 500mm. Also from what I've experienced, the Sigma 150-500 OS is good for distance work at 500mm, and gets worse for closer targets (like test charts!). Below 400mm, the 150-500 is pretty dang sharp, especially at 250mm and below.

I personally own the 150-500. It's an awesome airshow lens, especially when there's a lot of atmospheric thermal distortion (the shimmer effect on a road). It's really nice from 150-350mm, and not bad at 500mm if you shoot at stuff more than a quater mile away.

All the reviews and test photos show the 50-500 OS fixes most of the 150-500 OS's problems, and extends the zoom range to 50mm. OTOH, it's also 60% more expensive (here in the US).

If I were to do it over again, I'd get the 50-500 OS in a heartbeat. But it's hard to justify an additional $1000 just for an additional 100mm of zoom and better OS! (I figure I could get $600 for selling the 150-500, meaning $1000 difference)
