Do you really need a light meter?

I find my self more & more wanting to get into portrait work.( some day my goal is to have my own garage studio like many of us start with) My question is do those of you out there that do studio & location work find that you really need a light meter? to get the kind of results that your looking for ? or can you get by just by looking at Picture on the back screen of your camera along with the histogram info/blinkys etc.
Thanks Ron
