Re: selling cameras at 'competitive' pricing just cannot be done

The combined juxtaposition of small sensor camera and batch production is the wrong mix. Put basically, their products cannot be competitive with the plant they have, the answer is to either change the plant for volume production which would reduce them to perhaps 1 camera, or change the camera type for something with a higher specification that can still sustain the necessarily higher pricing. IMO the latter is the only choice, that or get out of the business

I think that you could be on to something with regard to putting out higher specification products on a smaller manufacturing scale. There is at the moment an opportunity for Olympus in the mFT area to deliver a high grade body and a few fast high grade lenses both areas in which Olympus is expert and differentiate themselves as the high end niche player. It could also leave the door open to the possibility of a small run of a future E-5 replacement to satisfy the SHG users who would likely pay a premium price.

A rugged high specked mFT model would appeal to both the current Olympus DSLR users and to those looking for a smaller but still high performing accompaniment to a FF kit. I think that the potential gain in image quality between FT and APS is not significant enough and a combo of mFT for most uses especially travel, hillwalking etc. combined with a FF set up for specialist needs such as very high ISO or shallowest DOF , is quite an attractive proposition. And in fact I find that I nearly never use my APS camera anymore preferring the mFT gear for most out and about stuff and using the FF stuff for what it is best at. It would be an ironic outcome if both FT and APS lost out to mFT and FF .
