I think the 16-85 will be sharper than the 18-105 after they've both been dropped or exposed to weather...the build quality is quite a bit better on the former lens. I wouldn't say the 16-85 is razor sharp, but it's very sharp across its range, and the 16mm difference is way more useful than the 105 difference. If you don't anticipate abusing the lens at all the cheaper one is probably fine...but no one plans on abusing their gear.
