Painted effect

Before you choose SAVE ACTIONS... from the menu, be sure the action set (not the action itself), the action set is selected (highlighted).

Otherwise SAVE ACTIONS... will be grayed out.
Nice results on your interpretation...

How to distribute your action:
  • Create a new action set
  • ALT+Drag your action into it (this will make a "copy" of the action)
  • Action palette menu: Save Actions... (Desktop is convenient)
  • Attach .atn to e-mail and send away
Put me on the distribution if you would. :=) [email protected]

Sorry about the delay ron

Radius 15 threshold 50 edge only and quality medium :)

Howie
. Create a duplicate layer. On the
new layer, name it dissolve. On the dissolve layer, to to filter
blur smart blur edge only and normal. I set the settings to 15% and
50% of the two things that are in smart blur. Cant remember what
they are called off hand as I am doing this from work LOL.

Howie, as I understand it, you set Smart Blur as follows:
radius: 15
threshold: 50
mode: edge only
What setting do you use for Quality?

Thanks,

Ron

Howie,

At your suggestion I tried again on an image taken on a gloomy day. I think this is more like it. Opinion, please.

Hi, I have been experimenting in photoshop again LOL. I used this
image to create a painted effect. Create a duplicate layer. On the
new layer, name it dissolve. On the dissolve layer, to to filter
blur smart blur edge only and normal. I set the settings to 15% and
50% of the two things that are in smart blur. Cant remember what
they are called off hand as I am doing this from work LOL.

The image with now be black with white lines. Press Ctrl & I
together. This should inverse it and have white with black lines.
Create a third layer by making a duplicate of disolve. Call this
third layer soft and switch it off by clicking on the eye.

Now with the disolve layer add a layer mask and using a large soft
edge brush, changing the effect from normal to disolve, start
erasing the photo, as much as you want. As little or as much. Once
this is complete, turn back on your soft layer. Now finally blend
the third layer with soft light and it gives a wonderful painted
effect. To create the border, make sure you have black as your
background. Increase the canvas size to desired effect. This should
give you a black border. Using the colour picking tool I chose two
colours from the image. Use the magic wand to highlight the black
canvas and with the gradiaent tool set to fore to background, draw
a diagonal line from left to right. This should then fill in the
black canvas with the colours you have chosen. You can also add
some gausian Blur and noise if you wish to.. Hope this all makes
sense :)

That is much better Lynda and the effect works really well for this photograph :) Like I say it seems to work better on gloomy days and if you have a photo you may think to throw away, it might just give the oppurtunity to salvage it :) That was my idea anyhow :)

I'd greatly appreciate a copy too! Perhaps it can be added to the forum action folder...

Thanks!

Here is one of my samples of this effect. You can find more
samples at http://www.pbase.com/paul_stuckless/painting_effect . I
added some texture for effect to make it look more like a painting
than a photo. I have created an action for this to make is easier
if anyone is interested.

I love what all of you have done to the paintings! I am very young and havent worked at photoshop as long as you have. I don't quite get exactly what you did. Could you explain a lil better please? Thanks.

Do these actions just work in photoshop, or do they also work in PSP7?

I have learned so much just reading these forums in the short while since

I have gotten back into photography. Everyone is so great to share all the secrets they have learned. Thanks to all! Lanna

Lanna:

Didn't see your question until just now. Sorry for the slow reply.

The bad news: Photoshop actions don't work with PSP.

The good news: This effect can be recreated in PSP without too much difficulty. I don't use PSP much, so the following is going to be pretty rough. There are probably better / more effective ways. If nothing else it will get you started.

1. Duplicate the background layer.

2. To the duplicate apply FILTERS > Artistic Effects > Colored Edges (select black or a very dark gray from the color palette)

3. COLORS > Adjust Levels -- adjust the sliders on each end toward the middle. You're trying to eliminate as much "noise" in the image as possible -- and just leave clean lines. It will take a little experimenting; doesn't have to be perfectly noiseless.
4. In the Layer palette set the blend for this layer to DISSOLVE.

5. Duplicate this layer and set the blend mode of the new layer to OVERLAY.

6. Click on the previous layer (the one with blend = DISSOLVE) to select it.

7. From the Tool palette, choose the Eraser tool... Set the diameter fairly large (100 or so); set the opacity to about 30-40ish... then start "erasing." Kind of a grainy color will start showing through. The more you erase, the more color.

Hope this helps. Keep having fun and learning a lot!

Hi Pete:

RE: Can you help?
Sure can and glad to do it.

Actions and Plugins are two different critters = they live in different folders. No big deal. Easy to get all this functionality bass ackwards sometimes. Have done it myself many times. Anyway...

Ultimately you want to get the unzipped .atn file into the Actions palette. There's a couple ways of doing this. This one works for PS7.
  • Move the .atn from \Plug-ins
to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Presets\Photoshop Actions
(assumes install of PS in C:\Program Files... but you get the idea.)
  • Open Photoshop
  • Open image against which you want to run the action
  • Window > Actions (to display the Actions palette)
  • Actions palette: Click black triangle... top right to display menu. You should be able to see the new action in the list of actions. Drag down until you select the action and release. The action will be copied from \Photoshop actions into the Actions palette.
  • Click the triangle to the left of the Action set name (this will "open" the action set revealing the action inside)
  • Single click on the action name (to highlight it)
  • Bottom of action palette: Click the "play" triangle to start (play) the action
That ought to do it...

Let me know if this gets you farther down the line.
