Micro lens reflection?

Well, obviously I can only speculate and that is always fraught with peril!

That said, it looks and behaves a lot like you might expect from reflections off of the microlenses being re-reflected off the back of the sensor cover or AA filter back onto the sensor. Such an effect would become worse as you stopped down because for equal exposure the light will be coming from a more concentrated point - as you open the aperture up the reflections will become less intense and more spread out so they merge and become difficult to notice. Red color would be due to the AR coatings on the cover/filter starting to not perform so well at the edge of the spectrum. I am sort of failing, however, to adequately explain how the pattern is being magnified.

Anyway, just a thought.
