Just Purchased the A55 - Now The Lens

A one lens solution for travel is a prosumer camera. These are excellent, easy to use, light and convenient. I've used both and a long zoom single lens ultrazoom does the trick.

For DSLR get three lenses and G lenses.

Just came back from a trip to India, Egypt, and Turkey. Brought my A55, 16-105, 75-300, and 50 f/1.4. I only ever used one of those for the entire trip, the others never made it out of the pelican case. I'll let you guess which one that was. ;)

--in case you are interested Tamron is coming out with a new lens 18-270 PEZ. Should make a good travelling lens with the A55. Good bokeh too.

In my readings, the user reviews on the new Tamron on the Canon and Nikon forums indicated a general feeling that the older version is far sharper. Perhaps the more compact size comes at a cost of IQ. That's why I proceeded with my SAL18250 order.

I was in the same quandary and and purchased the Sony 18-250. Just a lovely all around lens.

How can there be reviews on a lens which isn't yet on the market for any manufacturer? This is the lens which hasn't come out yet. I think in April
Not actually having a piece of equipment rarely stops some of us from forming an opinion and passing it along as though it were gospel.

The new Tamron 18-270 PZD lens has been available for the Canon and Nikon mounts. For whatever reason, the one for Sony is scheduled to be available in March/April. If the optics for the lenses are the same for the different mounts, I would presume the user comments from the Canon and Nikon holds water.

Where would one find those comments?
Palermo,

I take it you're referring to the new Tamron pzd lens ? If so, you can do a search on 'pzd' in the Nikon and Canon DSLR lens talk forums. Like this one here:

I'm also tracking the current feedback to see if the user reviews turn positive. My SAL18250 is arriving soon but I really hoping for the new Tamron pzd. I understand it will be quieter for video than the Sony lens. Not exactly sure if it will be smaller or lighter than it though. It's a bit more money but it may have VC on board for the Sony mount which will help with any overheating issue and besides, it will be my 'travel' lens.

The Tamron 17-50mm. 6 year warranty and sharper than the 16-80mm Sony, oh yeh, the Sony may have problems after 1-3 years and you will probably wish you bought the Tamron because even if you warranty it it's not Sony.

I sent back the 16-80mm Sony today and kept the 17-50 Tamron. If you need to crop with the Tamron you might find your image will still be sharper than taken with the 16-80mm. It's that good.

As far as contast and color... it's better. These short range zooms are aproaching the quality of primes and you need to try one to prove it to yourself and compare them. Why get a prime 50 f/1.4 that you have to close down to f/2.8 to get a sharp image that is about the same as the Tamron at f/2.8?
