I am using both because neither is perfect.

Flat view saves time especially when the internet connection is slow but it is more prone to confusion because you can't be certain who is reply to who when no text is quoted. Again thread view is not always easy to follow when no text is quoted. Consider the scenario of someone replying to a post above with 24 posts and a pile of layers in between. It is quite taxing on the eyes.

Just some preliminary thoughts, it might help (in thread view) if the leading post of each string of posts is in a different colour from the posts that follow. Alternatively, number the envelope of each post from 1 to 150, and show it inside each post (except the OP's) the number of the post that it is responding to. Does it make sense?
