Canon MP-E65

This lens seems to actually be an element or two at the end of an adjustable extension tube.

So at the 5x setting, the photon density at the sensor would be lots less than at 1x, whereas a true 5x lens would have the same photon density.

My question - how would the 5x image compare to a 1x image up-sized five times? Or, is there a way to compare the quality of images shot using an extension tube to those shot without one (assuming identical image size)?
