Lens collection. Any idea using only fast primes?

I compared my SX200 compact to a friend's 1000D with the cheap 18-55mm lens indoors. I have to say the dslr didn't perform any better than my P/S. I'm thinking of a 550D but I'm not interested in spending money on only increasing the size of the camera without any benefits. So it seems like a complete waste to get lenses like the cheap 18-55, I might as well use my compact.

So my question is: is there any idea in getting a lens collection consisting of only fast primes, e.g. a 20mm, 50mm, 100mm macro and maybe one longer telephoto prime like the Canon 200mm f/2.8? Or should I get something like the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8? Then I guess I should skip the 100mm macro and 50mm and go for e.g. the Tamron 60mm macro instead.

I'm afraid if I buy something like the Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 or Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 I will encounter the same problem as with my friends 1000D and 18-55mm.

What kinds of lens collections do you guys use? Is a zoom always good to have?
