Can direct sunlight harm the sensor?

I hope this isn't a dumb question.

I'm an Oly 4/3 guy who recently bought a G1. I really like the G1, but I'm still learning about it.

My wife asked me to take this picture today.

At first I told her that I couldn't (because I didn't want to look at the sun through the viewfinder), but she insisted.

The cool part: I realized that it doesn't hurt your eyes to look at the sun through an EVF! (duh.)

The question: Then I wondered if the sun can hurt the exposed sensor. Wouldn't it be focused on one spot and heat it up, like we used to do with magnifying glasses in grade school? I've heard of holes burned in shutter curtains in fillm cameras.

Can I hurt the sensor on my G1 by pointing it at the sun?
