I have a D40 and want something with better high ISO capabilities. Features are not of much consequence, or at least not as significant as low light capability/quality/speed. I am OK w/having to commit to AF-S glass as well. Thoughts?

I just got a D3100 for it's video capability and as a second, more compact body. I've also got a D300 with the grip which I still love. The D3100 is pretty incredible in terms of low-light and picture quality for an entry level camera. My wife has a D3000 and the D3100 blows it away.

Shame they don't sell the D3100 without a lens. Once they just do a body only, if I can get it for $400, I think I will jump at it

You should be able to resell the kit lens new at a good price since you already get a discounted price in the kit. Or perhaps you can negotiate with a dealer to sell you the body only. You may not have to wait for a body only offer.

They do body only D3100 here in Canada. Not for $400 though.

That was the 40-year old plus Nikon advertising slogan. It is true for the D7000.

Get the D7000. If you get something else that you end up replacing, that would be the most expensive item you have purchased.

If you don't want to spend $1200, the D5000 is $649 with a lens at B&H and it uses the same battery (well, there is a 2mA difference but a buddy of mine uses the batteries in his D40 and vice versa).

Oh, and 3200 iso is no problem with a D5000, but if you want 6400, from what I am hearing the D7000 would be your camera.
