Will you still purchase the Sigma/Foveon?

I'm keeping the SD9 on order. The night samples and some of the ISO 400 shots were really disappointing, but I'm going to stick with the SD9.

I looked through all the photos I've printed over the last year and 99% of those would have been fine/better with the current SD9. My annual Christmas tree shot in the dark with all those blinking bright lights will have to go, but I guess I can deal with that.

Anyone else going to give it a go?

AND I WANT IT NOW!

ha!

So - I will keep my pre-order for the SD9-

And I have the Sony 707 to go along with it - and it is really good at low-light/no-light shots - and I think it will make a nice combo...

I did call you know who at Canoga yesterday and he said you know who at Sigma gave him a lame excuse why it hadn't made it to the US yet. Canoga is expecting it any day...he was going to call Sigma again tomorrow, Thursday.

I'm off work Friday, I'd love to have it for a long weekend...but probably not.

I'm still right there with you Sam,

Well -

My sources spoke to you-know-who from you-know-where, and s/he said that it would be here you-know-when.

But get this -

You-know-who said that without knowing you-know-what!

Can you believe it?

=)

Ha!

That's funny....

I guess we have nothing to do but amuse ourselves as we wait!

Thanks for the post Leah! And I hope Canoga gets one (or more) soon -

I am just so eagar to see more and more pics - and to take some my self!

Those last few from Jeffrey were really nice I thought - did you like them?

=)

Hang in there Leah - It's-a-coming....(and the pick-up will be you-know-where...)

=)

I won't be investing a dSLR for some time yet, but the SD9 is clearly my choice at the moment. I will be interesting to see if a new Foveon based camera (or a Foveon clone) will hit the marked in the next year to come.

I'm really looking forward to Phil's review!

Well, some of them look just great, thanks Jeffrey for all your time. The foveon sensor seems to wrap around what it sees and gives the image a more 3D look, or more "real". I think it is superior to a 6mp bayer sensor in good light.

There is noise, ISO 100 looks just about like ISO 200 on the D60 I had. It shows up mostly in the darker areas. It won't be hard to clean up if necessary and probably won't show in prints at all.

I loved the D60, except for it's autofocus. It was either a little in front or a little in back, or in low light you couldn't get it at all unless you used an external flash with focus assist light. I lost quite a few shots due to focus being off. If the SD9 is better/faster here it will still be a winner. I would not go back to the D60 if the SD9 weren't available I'd try an S2. It has problems also...track noise in low light, moire (sp?). They all have some sort of weakness.

I just hope the blooming is software related, this could put off quite a few potential buyers. Phil will not give the SD9 a "highly recommended" if this is not addressed!!!!!

the S2 seems sharper in Jeffery-at-home's comparison shots. The daylight photo, the one with the big red structure - you can see more detail in the metal girders in the fuji than in the sd9.

Also the noise. That iso400 night shot was absolutely unacceptable. My canon S110 could do better. If this is the best foveon can do at the moment, then I am let down and disappointed.

Still, I'm waiting for all the reviews to roll in before I even think about plunking down coin...

I'm keeping my order too, and hoping for a new version of the raw-software ASAP. But it’s disappointing that the night shots are as bad as they are… :´(

Also for economic reasons. Sigma has a big market-share here in Sweden, therefore it’s cheap and simple to get equipment fast.

I really, really crave for the camera!!!!!!

I looked at the Sigma samples at Steve's digicam. The strange purple extras in some areas are disturbing. The Canon D60 picture of the same house. on the other hand is showing a lot of green on one side and purple on the other side cromatic aberation. Oh well! Tried the Fuji version of this picture. It was so soft I could hardly detect any fringing at all. I skipped the Nikon and went straight for my own scanned pictures shot on film.Damn it. Tried a bicycle wheel at 200% and cromatic aberation on each spoke. Never noticed this before. What now? Ditch my film camera? And buy? Or stay out of analyzing at 200 % and be happy?

YES, I’ll keep my order - It feels like a very long wait... every day out checking for new info/pictures etc ;-). So Sigma - please put up PDF version off manual and brochure for us !

I think SD9 will work very well for most off my usage, and I really look forward to it. However the night shots made me skeptic, hope it can bee “worked around” / “reduced” by learning more about the camera (exposure) and software (conversion settings), after all no conversion down in bit will bee perfect, so the raw data shod look better. Maybe next version off the software has own settings (templates) for different type off shots, added to the auto/default and custom.

Do you know what the price will be for the SD9 in Sweden? Here in Norway, I don't even know of any shops who currently have Sigma equipment. I guess I'll need to do some research. But Sweden isn't far away though :-)

Well, let's see:

I just got a bill from Fuji to fix my S1, for $600.00, due to my being in a hurry and my cleaning swab being closed over and damaging the curtin.

I get dust on my sensor every time I shake the camera. I shoot with older Tokina ATX zooms and don't know if this exacerbates the problem.

I don't do night photography.

I really want a cover over my sensor chamber

The SD9 images are better than my S1.

I like the landscape images look/feel.

Yes I wll be buying the SD9!

The 12x18's look superb - across the board. (well, not night shots).

After using the SD-9 for 3 days, it is honestly very difficult to send him out to his new owner. Yes, he's got a number of BIG flaws (dust on the sensor, night noise, blooming, etc.). And yes he's definitely 1st generation. BUT, simply put, he can take shots that no other camera right now can match. Of course, the new Kodak and Canon look very good, but at $2000 you are getting a heck of a camera (I call him my "fair weather friend").

I walked out of my 6th story apartment this morning and saw all the trees in the next door park turning colors and INSTANTLY wanted to reach for the SD-9, not my S2. Ofcourse the S2 is no slouch, but I just knew the SD-9 would have given me an OUTSTANDING shot - and if he hadn't been packed up for delivery I would have. Who knows, maybe when I get my winter bonus?

With the 50mm 2.8 macro I was really impressed how good the focus lock was. Sigma does a much better job than I expected. I also have the same focus problems with my S2.

Only if the lens mounting was for Nikon dedicated lenses.

I know! And that's strange! Must be for all that oil! You folks can afford Canon L glass. :)

Could be nice someday to have a Scandinavian get together, and have some fun with our cameras! :)
