The Mac can read Fat 32 and NTFS formatted drives. It can natively write only to Fat 32 drives. Chances are your new mac will have more storage space than the old drive so copy the files onto the mac then format the drive for mac using disk utility in the utilities folder(within the applications folder) and then recopy onto the files onto the external.

On the other hand it is best to have 2 or more copies of your data. New drives are cheap now, you can easily buy a terrabyte drive for less than $100. I bough a bare 2 TB drive for $99 the other day(I could have saved a bit online but wanted it now). If you are buying a drive for a Mac buy one with combo of Firewire 800 and USB it is faster and frees up USB ports for other devices.
