OK how much weight are you putting on it? Do you need it light weight? Do you want a ball head?

For just 2 random tripods that could sever you well.

I took a course in art last winter. I learnt the difference between a fine oil painting, and a mechanical thing, like a photograph. The photograph shows only the reality. The painting shows not only the reality, but the dream behind it.

Not my review... but this is the $300 tripod/head I ended up with:

The head does have a little creep to it (where you focus lock on will change a little when you lock the head down) but I don't use a tripod every day of the week so it works well enough.....

Go to the store and try them out. It's the best way to decide. Look at price, size, weight, sturdiness, and overall feel and then pay for the one you deem the best for you. Make sure you take your gear with you.

I hadn't seen that review, but it overwhelmingly confirms all the other research I have done. I may order that combo this weekend..

I've never had a ball head. Can you adjust the left-right tilt with a ball head (not just the front-back, up-down tilt?)

Ball heads tilt left-right & up-down. Due to this I personally think the bubble level on the tripod is a little gimmicky. You can spend a few mintues getting the tripod completly level, but if you don't get the head level it really doesn't matter that the tripod is level. A bubble level on the plate that you attach the camera to or a level that you put onto your flash shoe would really be more useful.

I have a had three other less expensive tripods over the years, but I think I have finally purchased one that will be with me for the long term.

While this is a great idea do realize that places like B&H have tons of tripods and if you are going to a place like Best Buy you will only see a very limited few. If the store has only a limited selection I would go home and do your homework on those few before I bought.

Thanks for the info. I agree about the level. It doesn't make sense to level the legs only, unless there is a way to "center" (for lack of a better description) the ball head with the legs.

I notice the RC4 quick release has a level on it, which would seem to be the answer, but most folks don't seem to like it as well as the RC2. I can't tell the difference by looking at the pics I have seen of the two.

That's a tough thing to do for most of us. I live in Pittsburgh, which isn't a tiny city, but does not have a proper camera shop. Ritz photo is about as good as it gets, and they have a pathetic selection.
