Canon 70-200 2.8 lens, I vs II

I have been fortunate enough to borrow the Canon 70-200
f2.8 lens and although there is certainly a learning curve to
get the best out of it this is to me a really nice lens.

Right now you can buy this lens in the $1200 range, and the
newer II version in the area of $2000.

As a photographer I certainly have a lot to learn to get the
most out of such equipment, and understand that there is
probably more to be gained by working on skill and
knowledge than more and more expensive equipment.

My question is how much better is the newer version, and
in what ways is it superior?

I am interested in sports type photography, or more
specifically working dog trials, so quick accurate focus
is important, and of course dog fur just sucks light
photons in and keeps most of em, so the wide apertures
are important to me.

I have the Canon 7D so I think the potential for excellence
is there.

Any comments, especially from people shooting animals in
motion, would be greatly appreciated.

Is the II worth the extra $800?
