5D in the cold

I've just come home, disappointed, from a trip out to take some pictures.

I drove to a likely spot, parked the car and walked about a mile in 0C (32F) conditions, with the camera over my shoulder (i.e. not protected from the cold).

Here's a picture that I took at the start of the process

and here we are about twenty minutes later

Now clearly the light will have changed over the course of twenty minutes. But there still appeared to be rich colours visible to my eye when I took the second picture, yet all of the warmth, colour depth and richness has gone.

Does the 5D have problems in that kind of temperatures? Or is it just that the light changed and I didn't notice?
