You are correct. Low-end film SLRs were worse, as I recall. When I said "barely above 90%" guess I meant 95%.

Looking at the viewfinder accuracy measurements on imaging-resource.com, the P7000 is usable because it is cropped but centered, whereas the G12 is less usable because it is far off, with more cropping at the bottom than the top.

Optical viewfinders are a good way to conserve battery power, if nothing else. The P7000 seems predictable enough that I could learn to deal with it. The G12, not.
