But seriously, many of the laws in that region boil down to a simple premise; ... "we don't trust our people."
Look at the onerous laws against women's rights in many of those nations. Can't drive alone, if at all. Can't drive or appear in public with a man who is not related. Must cover some or all of themselves in public. And so on. They simply don't trust their male populace to act in a civil manner around women.
That's not to say that many other nations, including the USA, aren't guilty of similar forays into perpetual adolescence, but geez, when are we all going to grow up?

Relax. I'm not insulting an entire nation or its population. Actually, I'm insulting anyone on the entire planet who need laws to tell them how to act in a civilized manner around women, or who feel that such laws are the only way to insure such civilized behavior.People in the UK get arrested for taking photos in public places in London
