Shortfalls of the D700

Best reason is that it's over 2 years old w replacement possibly close

We don't know for sure of course but various experts go for a 3-year cycle.

In the meantime it seems clear that where one doesn't have a dire need for the widest angle possible, a D7000 might do the job just fine while offering more resolution at 16mp vs 12mp.

Last time around Sony had provided a great 12mp DX sensor, which was followed by a 12mp FX sensor and Nikon were able to recycle the D300 body into the D700 body. Only difference, a big difference, was that the D300 had been the first to enjoy the new chip and the D90 came only the following year with that same chip. This time around the D7000 gets the chip first. Which raises questions as to what happens in the D300 range.
