I just checked the IrfanView change log and it looks like lossless rotation/flip was added in 2000.

The IrfanView FAQ says:

Q: Are the JPG editing options for IPTC/Comment lossless?
A: Yes, the image itself is NOT recompressed.

And I rather think that's been there a while since it's followed by:

Q: Is IrfanView compatible with Windows 95 or 98?
A: Yes, IrfanView is compatible with all Win9x- and later Windows versions.

man i need to check what photomechanic is doing, hopefully nothing bad no matter the state of the machine
