Likely a marketing-driven thing before the real upgrade

Clearly the specs indicate that the GF2 is nothing new, and the preview confirms this.

So why launch this then? Pretty clear:

  • offer a product at a lower price point to make sure no one undercuts too badly. Margins should be OK since this is mostly re-cycling existing stuff

  • offer a smaller product that will look more appealing to some

  • also make that product more appealing to the masses, clearly the touch screen is something that the iPhone generation hate to be without (I found myself giving up on a 2 year old GPS unit last Sunday just because you couldn't navigate the screen like an iPhone which felt so frustrating)

And so what comes next?

  • I think it's a safe bet that Panny won't want to leave the higher-end bit of the EVIL market open. So it's likely that they will fairly soon come up with a successor to the GF1, which will use modern technology. This camera is probably only a few months out
