L Glass and protective filters - misake?

Hi. I have two L lenses and they are each currently sporting B+W UV filters. The reason I put them on was to protect the most vulnerable part of my investment, the front glass. I've read that this is a faux pas. My question is, faux pas or not, is any degradation in the quality of my photos offset by the value of protecting the lens or am I losing the benefit of buying better glass?

If it helps for perspective, while I want the best quality possible for myself, I don't sell any of my photos, I don't see enlarging anything beyond 20x30 (almost always smaller), my primary interests are wildlife and landscapes. The lenses are a 24-105 and 100-400 (maybe a 17-40 in the near future).
