How to: downsample 16bit into 8bit without posterization?

Can someone help with image posterization problem?

I develop 12bit RAW to 16bit ProPhotoRGB, and than I downsample to 8bit after levels and some minor manipulations. In 16bit image looks great, but when downsampled, some nasty posterization occur at blurred backgrounds and other gentle transitions.

I've developing into AdobeRGB, to is the wide gamut a problem, but I get the same result, with images, at very low ISO like 100.

This is driving me nuts!, any help appreciated!

Thanks!
