IMHO there's no excuse for changing ANY bits in the image in ANY way when you're just changing metadata. It's a sloppy, sloppy thing to do and speaks very poorly of the implementation.

Just to clarify: Microsoft worked around the limitation of the(ir own) API by implementing a private interface in their JPEG codec that presumably let them read/write the pixel data without decompressing it, and as a result both Windows and WLPG are able to perform lossless metadata updates and rotations on JPEG files when using the stock codec.

That's my point about a poor implementation. Who would architect an image suite that supports editing of metadata based an API that doesn't allow lossless copy of the image itself?

Any application that relies on undocumented workarounds in proprietary codecs in order to work properly is just begging for problems. The whole point of standardized APIs is for seamless interchangeability. The fatal design flaw isn't swapping the codec, it's relying on a documented API that lacks the functionality you need in order to do the job properly.

In other words, IMHO the flaw is in the application itself, not in the codecs or in the poor hapless user who happens to end up with the wrong one installed.
