Larry,

I've got the f4 version, paid about $200USD 2 years ago. I bought the cheap chinese aluminum M42 first, and could not get infinity (bad for a wide angle lens), so posted a similar message here, and bought the JTAT version - I would recommend it if you don't mind the price.

It's a fun lens, and I've had a lot of photographers comment on it, it looks great on an SD14. However, the results with that lens may not be what you are hoping for. It has limited coating, so you get a lot of flares. I actually like it for that in some cases. I don't find it super sharp, unlike the photos larryj posts from his Sigma 20mm 1.8, which seems incredibly sharp.

Here are some pictures of it and from it.

I had considered buying the f2.8, but the prices were over $400 then as well, and I seem to remember reading somewhere that the back of the lens could hit the screen. (I have a Chinon lens that does that, and it worries me whenever I use it).

I've bought almost all my lenses on eBay - if you only buy from sellers with 99.9% good reviews, and lots of sales, you can usually trust their listings. I got the 20mm from a guy in Budapest. I think it adds to the value in some way.

Enjoy your search.

One more thing.

I did this because I know I want a very good 20mm lens and I feel that Sigma would never satisfy me like they did with 50 1.4, 150 2.8 and the 85 1.4. I just feel they are not so keen on the wides.

So where in the heck besides Ebay can I get a Zeiss 20mm f2.8. I just don't trust Ebay. I would like one in a condition excellent or like new. Ones on Ebay look like they want too much for stuff that is in used condition and generally around 450.00.
Thats a good choice...Thats the PMBAA (Polish Made Black Anodised Aluminium) version. Whilst its made of Aluminium instead of Chrome plated Brass, like the Japanese JTAT version, its supprisingly durable and of course its nice and light.

Its never as nice a fit as the JTAT version but at half the price you cant complain.

interesting John and thanks. I guess I better study this a bit more.

Might hold off on the wide. And try something else first.

I didn't know this and I can't get it to work. Is it the green round dot in the VF, next between the shutter speed and the flash indicator?
Yes, the green dot lights when the camera believes focus has been reached. It has been said that you need to have put a Sigma lens on the camera at some point since the last time the camera was turned on in order to activate the focus confirm feature; I haven't confirmed this directly, but I have certainly seen the focus confirm feature work with manual lenses.

Robert
I just re-checked with current firmware, focus light behaviour is thus:

Install battery, fit sigma auto-focus lens and perform an autofocus operation so the camera locks and confirms focus.

Fit a manual focus lens and the green focus confirm light will remain lit while the lens is in focus and you have half pressed the shutter release.

The camera retains this ability until you change/remove the battery.

If you do not perform the procedure above then the green focus confirm light will flicker on briefly as the lens reaches focus if you are half pressing the shutter release, this is inconsistent and not very helpful.

Wow! I figured it out and it seems to work really well!! :-) My favorite lens is also my 35mm f2.4 flektogon and it's been really hard to get shots in focus, too many portraits has turned out with really sharp ears instead of eyes! Thanks for the tip!!

Thanks bro.

I'm assuming you mean the Carl Zeiss Flektagon 20mm f4?:

I've never had one myself and nor would I, given that it is known to suffer from a little CA wide open and because 20mm is'nt really that wide on a 1.7x crop camera.

I got the Tamron adaptall SP 17mm f3.5 instead as its wider, it has no observable CA wide open and its a lot cheaper. The Flektagon may be a tad sharper but I cant confirm that as I have never seen a direct comparison between the two.
So where in the heck besides Ebay can I get a Zeiss 20mm f2.8. I just don't trust Ebay.
I dont see why?...I have only had a couple of clangers when buying lenses on ebay, the vast majority being just as advertised so I am always happy to use ebay.
I would like one in a condition excellent or like new.
Thats asking a lot, considering the vintage of the Flektagon.

Ones on Ebay look like they want too much for stuff that is in used condition and generally around 450.00.

Have you tried looking on ebays abroad for bargains? For instance, I sometimes look on ebay.de (German ebay) or ebay.fr (French ebay) etc, for stuff that does'nt get listed on other ebays that use the English language.

I've had a few bargains this way. The only problem with ebay.de is that many German sellers wont accept paypal so you have to go to the trouble of arranging a money transfer with your bank, which can cost you a small fee. If its a good lens though then this is just a minor inconvenience.

Hi DSG, what's the deal with that pin? My Super-Takumar 35 (non-SMC) seems to operate the same whether the pin is engaged or not, with the auto aperture slider/switch on or off. Is it broken or do I not know what I'm doing with it, or something else?
They are not all the same...Some M42 lenses will work without the pin being depressed, as long as there is a manual-auto switch. Some will only work on manual or auto if the pin is depressed, some have no pins at all and will work ok manually all the time.

At least by only buying M42-SA adapters with built-in flanges your covering all the bases and you will be able to use ALL M42 lenses without problems.
And as long as I have your attention, that same lens produces strong green vignetting on my SD14. Any way to mitigate that or should I just try some other lenses?
Other lenses...Some have unique properties that can be avoided by buying lenses that dont suffer the same problems. For instance, the Pentacon 50mm f1.8 can suffer from the opposite to a vignette...A strong centre cast but leaving the edges uneffected. The cast in question is reddish purple in colour, not green and is caused by reflected light bouncing between the coated elements and the shiney, chromed iris blades.

It usually only occurs during flash photography where the subject is fairly bright and/or close to the lens. The lens it is based on, the Meyer Optik Gorlitz Oreston 50mm f1.8 does not suffer from the same problem, which is probably because it has matt black iris blades, reducing the chance of internal reflection but its has poorer edge performace than the later Pentacon.
I have both BTW.

From what I've read the f4 version is sharper. I'm not after DOF blur on this lens so a smaller starting aperture would be just fine. Plus it's a hundred dollars cheaper too.

Larry

Seriously, can you take DPR seriously?

I know the 20mm f4 flektogon is better than the f2.8, but never tried'em.
The one always recommended is the 135mm f3.5!
I had the 20/4 flektogon on my exaktas until 1972 when i changed to olympus om, then to contax in 1978.
the flektogon was a dream-lens. adapting exakta-lenses to sa, does this work?

It could...Exacta has a reg' distance of 44.7mm. I dont know the diameter and bore of the mount but a thin 0.7 thick adapter would be possible if the Exacta mount is several mm smaller than the SA mount. It would need to be machined to high tolerances though.

Otherwise, converting Exacta lenses to M42 or SA mount should'nt be too difficult.

I just wanted to thank you and others. The adapter came in and it was worth the prices. A very nicely crafted pieced. Many thanks to all.

Hi Larry, just wondering if you have obtained any M42 lenses to use with your adapter?

Take a picture, it'll last longer.

Not yet bro. I'm having hard time deciding which one I want. :( I think will get the 20mm f2.8 first. But then again... I was looking at the 135mm. 'rolling eyes'

Larry
